Application Process

What will I need for my UC application?

1) Transcripts

Before submitting your transcripts for colleges, refer to counseling as you fill out the application to ensure the information you enter is accurate.

2) Test Scores

UC/ CSU campuses will not consider SAT or ACT test scores when making admissions decisions or awarding scholarships. If you choose to submit test scores as part of your application, they may be used as an alternative method of fulfilling minimum requirements for eligibility or for course placement after you enroll.

3) Personal Statement

Counselors assist in drafting and revising essays to make a clear and strong essay.

4) Annual Income

for last year and the current year (your parents if you're a dependent; your income if you're independent). This is optional unless you're applying for an application fee waiver or for the Educational Opportunity Program.

5) Social Security Number

We use this to match your application to things like your test score report, final transcript(s) and, if you're applying for financial aid, your Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

6) Citizenship Status

You must enter your country of citizenship (or "No Selection"). If your country of citizenship is outside the United States, you'll need to provide your immigration status and your visa type.

7) California Statewide Student ID

Each K-12 student in California public schools is assigned an ID number. If it's not printed on your transcript, ask your counselor or registrar.

8) Credit Card

If you prefer to pay by check, you can mail your payment.

Junior & Senior College Application Timeline

11th Grade Timeline

Get ahead of the game with an 11th-grade timeline that outlines all the important dates, deadlines, and other crucial information you need to know in order to successfully prepare for college applications and pursue your dreams!

Winter

11th Grade Year

Start to organize your spring testing schedule. Research registration deadlines and exact dates and times of tests that are important such as the ACT and SAT.
Make sure you are participating in extracurricular activities. Colleges like to see students in more than 1 extracurricular activity. Try to focus on a particular subject to stand out. For example, music composition, debate, math decathlons, etc.
Begin to visit colleges that you are interested in that are local to you.

Fall

11th Grade Year

Meet with your school counselor to determine what classes you should be taking in order to put yourself in a good position for college.
Start reviewing colleges that are attainable based on your GPA, test scores, and extracurricular activities. Be sure to research each college, comparing the pros and cons of each.
Your potential major should be highly regarded at the college of your choosing i.e. If you wish to have a degree in Computer Science, MIT or CALTECH would be great options to consider.
If you are unsure of what career you might be interested in you may take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test to help you narrow down possible careers.
Take the PSAT in October. This is a great way to practice for the SATs but it also qualifies you for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Start thinking about college finances. Discuss as a family and determine if you need Financial Aid.

Spring

11th Grade Year

Take SAT or ACT practice tests. There are prep books that can help you see what it is like to take a test from start to finish.
Speak to your counselor about possible scholarship opportunities. Scholarships can help you significantly with college expenses.
Make sure to set up your senior class schedule in a way that will be successful during your college applications. Consider honors and AP courses to give make your application more appealing.
Compile a list of people in your life (teachers, mentors, coaches, boss) whom you would like recommendations and contact them. Asking them early can help beat the rush from others later on.
Plan out your summer. Summer work such as job opportunities, internships, and volunteer work, can all look appealing on a college application and should be something you consider.

Summer

11th Grade Year

Start visiting colleges that you are considering seriously if you haven’t already. Research your ten top options and plan trips to see the campuses.
Consider taking summer classes either from your high school or an accredited college. This can enhance your transcripts and increase your chances of getting into the college of your choosing.
Request applications from the colleges you wish to apply to and start working on them. This process may take some time and starting early can help set you up for success.

12th Grade Timeline

Fall

12th Grade Year

Narrow your list of colleges to between five and ten. Meet with a counselor about your college choices and, if you haven’t done so yet, download college applications and financial aid forms. Plan to visit as many of these colleges as possible.
Create a master list or calendar that includes:

Tests you’ll take and their fees, dates, and registration deadlines

College application due dates

Required financial aid application forms and their deadlines (aid applications may be due before college applications)

Other materials you’ll need (recommendations, transcripts, etc.)

Your high school’s application processing deadlines

Ask a counselor to help you request a fee waiver if you can’t afford application or test fees.
Take the SAT® one more time: Many seniors retake the SAT in the fall. Additional course work since your last test could help you boost your performance. Plus you already know what to expect on test day.

Be sure to have your SAT scores sent to the colleges you’re applying to.

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): To apply for most financial aid, you’ll need to complete the FAFSA. Oct. 1 is the first day you can file the FAFSA.
Complete the CSS PROFILE®: PROFILE is an online application used by certain colleges and scholarship programs to determine eligibility for their aid dollars.
Prepare early decision/early action or rolling admission applications as soon as possible. Colleges may require test scores and applications between Nov. 1 and Nov. 15 for early decision admission.
Ask a counselor or teacher for recommendations if you need them. Give each teacher or counselor an outline of your academic record and your extracurricular activities. For each recommendation, provide a stamped, addressed envelope and any college forms required.
Write first drafts and ask teachers and others to read them if you’re submitting essays. If you’re applying for early decision, finish the essays for that application now.
Complete at least one college application by Thanksgiving.
Ask counselors to send your transcripts to colleges. Give counselors the proper forms at least two weeks before the colleges require them.

Spring

12th Grade Year

Keep active in school. If you are waitlisted, the college will want to know what you have accomplished between the time you applied and the time you learned of its decision.
Visit your final college before accepting. You should receive acceptance letters and financial aid offers by mid-April. Notify your counselor of your choice. If you have questions about housing offers, talk to your counselor or call the college.
Inform every college of your acceptance or rejection of the offer of admission and/or financial aid by May 1. Colleges cannot require your deposit or your commitment to attend before May 1. Talk to your counselor or adviser if you have questions.
Send your deposit to one college only.
Take any AP® Exams. Show what you’ve learned in your AP classes. A successful score could even earn you credit, advanced placement, or both in college.
Waitlisted by a college? If you intend to enroll if you are accepted, tell the admission director your intent and ask how to strengthen your application.
Need financial aid? Ask whether funds will be available if you’re accepted.
Work with a counselor to resolve any admission or financial aid problems.
Ask your high school to send a final transcript to your college.
Review your financial aid awards: Review your financial aid awards: Not all financial aid awards are the same, so it’s important to choose the aid package that’s best for you and your family. Be sure to note what you have to do to continue receiving financial aid from year to year, and how your aid might change in future years.

Summer

12th Grade Year

Enjoy your summer before starting college. You have worked hard to make it to this point so go ahead enjoy the summer, you've earned it!
Consider taking an internship. Don't want to take a break this summer? Keep your mind sharp and take an internship that can help you toward your future career. This can help to make future connections after you graduate.
Prepare for your upcoming fall semester at your accepted college. Your college experience is coming soon, so be sure to prepare by:

choosing and registering for your fall smester classes

meeting up with your college counselor to go over all details

memorizing the college campus map so you know where to go the first day

taking care of all the financials, to ensure that you're not dropped from classes
